Workflow-first design

Most agent tools start from an agent and hand it tools:

Agent → tools → task

Azhi starts from a workflow, and an agent is only one kind of node:

Intent → workflow → code / tools / MCP / knowledge / agents / approvals → result

Steps that do not need a model run as ordinary code: fetching CI data, parsing, filtering, formatting and posting. The model is called only where judgment is needed. In the flagship weekly report, the numbers come from a Python script and are authoritative; the agent only explains them.

ConsequenceDetail
Fewer tokensOnly agent nodes spend tokens. script, tool, condition, retrieve, report and notify run without a model
Smaller blast radiusThe agent has gateway-only tools and a bounded context, not the whole machine
Checkable before runningThe definition is compiled: graph, ref types against output schemas, tool arguments, projections, CEL expressions and taint paths
Replaceable partsThe model, tool, knowledge source and executor behind a node can change without rewriting the workflow

A full coding harness (OpenCode, Claude Agent SDK) and a cloned workspace are created only for the step that needs them, optionally behind a condition. The rest of the workflow stays cheap.

None of the individual features is unique on its own. What can be distinctive is treating all of them as replaceable parts of one execution system, with governance and cost accounting built into the runtime.

The longer-term ambition is an execution fabric: one portable definition whose models, tools, knowledge and environments the runtime picks and optimizes. That is the roadmap, claimed only as each piece ships. See Project status.
